Just Do It

A marathon, a tennis match, a basketball court, what do these things have in common? They have many things in common, but more than likely anyone doing these things will be wearing athletic ware. The one brand that comes to mind is NIKE and its classic orange swoosh. One check mark on a shirt, shorts, or shoes and you know its Nike.

Walking around campus, I see girls parading around in Nike tempo shorts. Other Nike products that I see on a regular basis include neon tennis shoes, Jordan’s, tank tops, water bottles and draw string bags.

Most of the commercials that I can remember are of athletic people playing sports. The ad on their website currently has an average person playing, such as playing table tennis. There is a flash and then the athlete is in a table tennis tournament, and it ends with the same girl playing tennis against a famous tennis player. Most of their ads are sports related, and even though they all fit that category I feel like they are creative with the way that they present all sports advertising including commercials.nike

The main reason that I picked Nike for this post is because consumers from all around the world buy  Nike products. On the screen print you can see what countries you can ship Nike products. Some people will pay tons of money to be able to wear Nike. It costs lots of money to ship products from the United State to other countries, and just as much to buy their products in Nike or sporting goods stores.

Nike has a great following beach all of their branding tactics are cohesive. They also have a good identity and image; therefore, Nike has a good reputation!

Define: Culture

Standard

Before I post more elaborate articles on culture, culture should be defined.

There are many definitions of culture. Dictionary.com defines culture as the quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in arts, letters, manners, scholarly pursuits, etc.  Livescience.com defines culture as the characteristics of a particular group of people, defined by everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts.

Livescience.com also puts the world into five categories of culture and this is a summary of them:

1. The Western culture is the combination of Europe and the countries that were heavily influenced by European immigration. The Western world influences culture in every county in the world today.

2. Eastern culture includes China, Japan, Vietnam, North Korea, South Korea and India. These countries are much like the western world, influenced by the religious views of the past. But in these nations there is less of a division between secular society and religious philosophy.

3. Latin culture includes the Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries of Central and South America, including Mexico. They were influenced by the Spanish and Portuguese- Latin based languages.

4. Most, but not all, of Middle Eastern culture countries speak Arabic and believe in Islam.

5. African Culture essentially consists of two cultures in Africa; the first, North Africa, is heavily influenced by Europe and Southwestern Asia, as well as Islamic practices. Sub-Saharan African culture has a wide spread language, cuisines, and music.

Whether we are a product of our culture or a rebel against our culture because we don’t agree with the norms such as the ones above, we are all a part of a culture and I’m excited to learn more about culture.
